Working in my sketchbook is like going to a gym that I carry along with me at all times.  What I choose to draw in them is secondary to just exercising my hand in an effort to improve it. To this end I tend to copy photos that I might find in a book, magazine or website in order to focus entirely on the craft. Later, after getting warmed up,  I will apply these exercises to an ongoing large drawing that I have on my easel at home.   As of this year I have completed over 160 sketchbooks of various shapes and sizes, with an 13.5" x 11" hardbound book by Canson being the largest and most frequent.  Each one is full of images that range from human and animal portraits to a series of concept drawings based on things I may have read or heard in a piece of music .
